Bamboozle, author’s note: vii: “I didn’t think the fare would be so expensive. You’re not trying to bamboozle me, are you?”

Bamboozle: means to deceive by underhanded methods.

Healed, (p. 7): “My skin healed, though I still have scars on my shoulders”

Healed: To restore to health or soundness

Salvaged, (p. 9): “…Decency being salvaged at the very end by slight…”

Salvaged: The rescue of a ship, its crew, or its cargo from fire or shipwreck.

Bench, (p. 13): “There are benches”

Bench: Nautical A thwart in a boat

Vet, (p. 17):  “…To cross-examine the keeper, to summon the vet.”

Vet: To subject to veterinary evaluation, examination, medication, or surgery.

Pits, (p. 19): “Its pits filled in, the cages torn down”

Pits:  A natural or artificial hole or cavity in the ground.

Jowls, (p. 25): “… Yet he had the most impressive jowls I have ever seem…”

Jowls: A small focal accumulation of fat on the lower cheek overlying the jaw bone; prominent jowls make a person look old(er) and may be a cosmetic concern for the owner

Entirety, (p. 25): “He was a regular visitor who read labels and descriptive notices in their entirety and approved…”

Entirety:  The state of being entire or complete; wholeness

Grinned, (p. 27): “Mr., Kumar grinned broadly.”

Grinned: To smile broadly, often baring the teeth, as in amusement, glee, embarrassment, or other strong emotion

Ire, (p. 31): “…animals that inflame the ire of the maniacs…”

Ire: Anger; wrath.

Dim, (p. 33): “it was a vast and dim cement cavern…”

Dim:  Lacking in brightness

Surmise, (p. 41): “I surmise that Rosie and Copycat never…”

Surmise: To infer (something) without sufficiently conclusive evidence.

Imprison, (p. 49): “…until it manages to shed the sheaths that imprison it here below.”

Imprison: to confine in or as if in prison

Unremittingly,(p. 51): “it was building unremittingly unrevealing of what it held inside…”

Unremittingly: Never slackening; persistent.

Unleavened, (p. 59): “It seemed to be some sort of unleavened bread.”

Unleavened: Made without yeast or any other leavening agent
