Worrywart, p.97: " and you, my father , my loving worrywart? " 
Worry wart: hinks about unfortunate things that might happen

Steadily, p.98: "only his Eyes were steadily on me " 
Steadily:  Firm in position or place; fixed.

Grief, p.98: "i felt ill with grief " 
Grief:  A source of deep mental anguish.

Davits, p.103: " it was leaning in from its davits "
Davits:  a crane-like device

Gusts, p.102: "i suppose some of the gusts would have upset umbrellas"
Gusts:  A strong, abrupt rush of wind

Hotfooted, p.103: "i let go , hotfooted it to the wall , moved over and pilled open the door . "
Hotfooted: a practical joke that involves inserting a match surreptitiously between the sole and upper of the victim's shoe and then lighting it

Seething, p.105: " the life fell through the air and we hit the seething water "
Seething: To be violently excited or agitated

Crookedly, p.106: “the lifeboat now had a prow projecting over the waves, if crookedly
Crookedly: Having or marked by bends, curves, or angles.

Flickered, p.107:”lights flickered and went out”
Flickered: To move waveringly; flutter

Burbling, p.107: “i watched the ship as it disappeared with much burbling and belching.”
Burbling: A gurgling or bubbling sound, as of running water

Semblance, p.109: “only its slim front legs had a semblance of normal position”
Semblance: An outward or token appearance

Drool, p.111: "…so called because she tended to drool.."
Drool: To let saliva run from the mouth

Stern, p.115: “yet everytime the hyena paused at the stern bench, my heart jumped”
Stern:  the rear part of a ship     

Dimishing, p.125: “it protested with dimishing vigour”

Slippery, p.125: “…and blood being slippery…”
Slippery: causing or tending to cause things to slip or slide
